Motorcycle Packing Tips for European Tours

Motorcycle riding famous Stelvio Pass Italy 48 hairpin bends spectacular alpine scenery world's best motorcycle roads

As one of the best know roads across Europe the B500 is visited by many bikers each year to ride its smooth tarmac and sweeping bends. We start our day on this epic road before heading across southern Bavaria and on to our two night stay close to the Grossglockner. Rest day or a choice of ride outs are available including a visit to Hitler’s Summer retreat or a full day exploring the famous Grossglockner high alpine road which at 8215 feet is the highest mountain pass in Austria. With hairpins a plenty, mountain top views, lakes and glaciers there is plenty to keep riders and pillions happy.

After the Grossglockner we head towards Italy crossing the Southern Tyrol area and towards the beautiful mountain landscapes, sheer cliffs and rocky outcrops of the Dolomites.

Following a nights rest in an alpine ski resort we have a full day to explore the Dolomites, Passo Campolongo, Passo Gardena, Passo San Pellegrino are just a few of delights to explore today. The next day we head towards the famous Lakes of Italy via Passo Rollo ending our day on the shores of Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake. We have a 2 night stay at Lake Garda. A well earnt day off follows and there’s a ride out option for those who want more time in the saddle or spend the day on the lake hopping from picturesque lake side town to lake side town or head over to the cable car at Malcesine which will take you to the top of Monte Baldo for breath taking views over Lake Garda.

After a relaxed day off at the lake its back on the bikes heading towards the pretty Spa town of Bormio and the start of the famous Stelvio pass (As today is a shorter day there may be time for those that are keen to take a jaunt to the top of Stelvio before dinner).

We head up the infamous Stelvio Pass next day one of the routes that is on almost every bikers to do list.  We have 2 route options today one taking in the both east and west sides of Stelvio and the other slightly shorter utilising the Umbrial Pass.  Crossing into Switzerland we head to our next 2 night stop via the Oberalpstrasse passing some famous 007 film locations en route to our typical alpine hotel which is a perfect location for the next days adventures.

Next possibly the highlight of the tour, but with so many great roads ridden already it’s a difficult one. We ride the 5 passes of the Andermatt loop including the Grimsal Pass, Tremola Pass, San Gotthard Pass and Nufenen its actually 6 passes in total but who’s counting! Stunning scenery, sweeping bends and switchbacks. Today has something for everyone and we are sure there will be many smiling faces in the evening.

Heading away from the Alps back towards France next we still have plenty of great riding roads to explore before reaching the Vosges Mountains for our overnight stop.

Heading across open French countryside using the Route des Cretes, stopping on route at Verdun to visit the WW1 memorial before our overnight stay next to the Semois River.

Our final day starts with a quick visit to the Chimay Classic Road Circuit which is still actively used to this day. Back into France for the last leg of our trip up to the tunnel and the crossing back to the UK.

Alps & Dolomites Motorcycle Tour – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to take an Alps and Dolomites motorcycle tour?

The best time for an Alps and Dolomites motorcycle tour is June to September. July and August offer guaranteed warm weather and all mountain passes open, with temperatures of 20-30°C (68-86°F) in the valleys and 10-20°C (50-68°F) at high altitude. June and September are slightly cooler but have fewer tourists. The Stelvio Pass typically opens in late May/early June and closes in October depending on snow conditions.

How difficult is riding the Stelvio Pass on a motorcycle?

The Stelvio Pass is challenging but manageable for riders with intermediate mountain riding experience. The eastern side features 48 hairpin bends over 15 miles, while the western side has 40 hairpins. The road surface is generally excellent smooth tarmac, though it can be busy with tourist coaches in peak season. Take your time, ride at your own pace, and you’ll find it exhilarating rather than intimidating. Our experienced guides provide briefings before major passes and support throughout.

What’s included in the Alps and Dolomites tour package?

The tour includes return Eurotunnel crossing (Folkestone-Calais), 13 nights accommodation in 3-4 star hotels, daily breakfast, welcome and farewell group dinners, detailed route maps with GPS files, expert tour guide support, hotel parking, and comprehensive daily itineraries. You provide your own motorcycle, riding gear, fuel, lunches, optional dinners, travel insurance, and personal expenses. Swiss motorway vignette (approx £35) is also not included.

What are the road conditions like in the Alps and Dolomites?

Road conditions in the Alps and Dolomites are generally excellent. Switzerland, Austria, and Germany maintain superb smooth tarmac on all major routes. Italian mountain passes are well-maintained with good surfaces, though some sections may have patches or minor imperfections. The historic Tremola Pass features original cobblestones which add character. All roads are suitable for touring motorcycles. Some passes may have gravel in corners from winter damage in early season (June), so always ride within your limits.

Can I join the Alps and Dolomites tour as a solo rider?

Absolutely! Solo riders are very welcome and make up a significant portion of our tour groups. You can choose between sharing a twin room with another solo rider or upgrading to a private single room. Most tours feature a mix of solo riders, couples, and friends, creating a friendly atmosphere. Many solo riders form lasting friendships on our tours and return year after year.

What type of motorcycle do I need for the Alps and Dolomites tour?

Any reliable motorcycle is suitable, we generally suggest 500cc or above, but the modern adventure scooters such as the Honda ADV350 are also more than capable. Popular choices of course include BMW GS series, Honda Africa Twin, Triumph Tiger, adventure tourers, sport tourers, touring bikes. Your motorcycle should be roadworthy, properly serviced, and equipped with luggage capacity for touring. We recommend preparing your bike according to our motorcycle preparation guide, including checking tyres, brakes, chain, and fluids before departure.

What can I do on the Lake Garda rest day?

Lake Garda offers numerous activities for your rest day. You can take an optional ride around the lake visiting beautiful towns like Sirmione (famous for its castle and thermal baths), Malcesine, Limone, and Riva del Garda. The Monte Baldo cable car from Malcesine offers spectacular 360° views from 1,760m altitude. Alternatively, relax by the lake, swim, rent a boat, explore lakeside cafes and restaurants, sample Italian cuisine and gelato, or simply unwind after a week of exhilarating mountain riding.

How many riders are in a typical Alps tour group?

Tour groups typically range from 8 to 12 riders, creating an ideal balance between personal attention and group camaraderie. Smaller groups allow flexibility in riding pace, easier navigation through mountain passes, better accommodation at authentic alpine hotels, and stronger group bonds. Our experienced tour guide leads from the front while ensuring all riders feel supported and comfortable. We never exceed 12 riders to maintain quality and safety standards.

Do I need a Swiss motorway vignette for this tour?

Yes, you’ll need a Swiss motorway vignette (road tax sticker) which costs approximately £35 (CHF 40) and is valid for the calendar year. You can purchase this at the Swiss border, at petrol stations just before entering Switzerland, or online in advance. The vignette must be displayed on your motorcycle windscreen. While we primarily use scenic mountain passes rather than motorways in Switzerland, you’ll still use some motorway sections. Austria also requires a vignette (€15 for 10 days), which can be purchased at the border.

What makes the Grossglockner High Alpine Road so special?

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is Austria’s most spectacular mountain pass and one of Europe’s greatest motorcycle roads. Built in the 1930s, it features 36 numbered hairpin bends, reaches 2,504m (8,215 feet) at Hochtor, and offers stunning views of Austria’s highest mountain, Grossglockner (3,798m), plus glaciers and alpine lakes. The road is exceptionally well-maintained smooth tarmac. Key highlights include the Edelweißspitze viewing platform at 2,571m and the opportunity to visit the Pasterze Glacier. Toll fee approximately €37 per motorcycle.
