One of the most scenic passes in Switzerland and the country’s second-highest paved pass at 2,478 meters, yet surprisingly overlooked by many tourists. The Nufenen (also called Novena Pass) connects Valais and Ticino cantons with beautiful twisty mountain roads featuring countless switchbacks and hairpin bends on both approaches. From the north (Ulrichen), sweeping curves climb through open alpine meadows with breathtaking panoramic mountain views. The southern approach from Airolo offers steeper, more dramatic riding with tighter curves. At the summit, spectacular 360° vistas and relative solitude create a peaceful high-alpine experience. There tends to be less traffic than famous neighbors, making the Nufenen a favorite among experienced riders seeking technical challenges, stunning scenery, and the rare luxury of having Swiss passes largely to yourself.

Susten Pass

Another epic Swiss mountain pass at 2,224 meters, completing the famous Andermatt loop alongside Furka and Grimsel. The Susten features incredibly varied riding—from wide sweeping valley roads building speed and rhythm, to dramatic switchbacks as you reach the summit carved into steep mountainsides. The western approach from Innertkirchen follows the scenic Gadmen valley with long, flowing curves, while the eastern descent toward Wassen offers perfectly cambered corners with stunning Reuss valley views far below. Impressive engineering includes tunnels bored through solid granite and avalanche galleries protecting against winter dangers. The summit’s Steingletscher Hotel provides perfect refreshment stops with panoramic alpine terraces. It’s easy to see why the Swiss Alps are a must-visit destination for bikers from all over the world—the Susten exemplifies everything that makes Swiss pass riding legendary.
